The first oral antiviral treatment approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Pfizer’s Paxlovid is a pill that can be taken at home by high-risk COVID-19 patients. This dual-action drug works by combining two different medications, which together stop the infection from growing in your body. Currently, Paxlovid is available at over 37,800 locations in the U.S.

Within just the first week of June 2022, there were over 1200 COVID-19 related hospitalizations in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that getting treatment for COVID-19 can help prevent hospitalization and death from the infection. This is especially true for the older adult and unvaccinated populations, who are the most susceptible to this infection.

Pharmacies That Carry Paxlovid in New Jersey

In March 2022, the Biden-Harris Administration launched the nationwide “Test to Treat” initiative to increase access and availability to the lifesaving COVID-19 treatment. This program allows each patient to get tested for COVID-19, consult a healthcare provider, receive a prescription, and have it filled out - at the same location. Paxlovid is among the most effective treatments for COVID-19 as it decreases the risk of hospitalization or death in almost 90 percent of cases.

Paxlovid Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Because Paxlovid is still one of the newer antiviral drugs for treating COVID-19, for most people, there is still a lot to learn about the drug and how it works. Please find below a short list of frequently asked questions about Paxlovid and its use.

When should I take Paxlovid?

It is recommended that patients start their Paxlovid course within the first five days of developing symptoms. It is best to start taking antiviral medication as soon as possible. Dr. Jeffrey Topal shares that once the virus stays in your body for more than a week, the damage might be too severe to treat with the medication. If you attempt to test for COVID-19 at home, it is essential to remember that the at-home tests do not return a positive result for several days. In that case, you might choose to get an RT-PCR or rapid test done.

Does Paxlovid have side effects?

The drug is well-received by most patients. The most common side effects of taking Paxlovid include an impaired sense of taste (taste of metal), an upset stomach, raised blood pressure, or muscle aches. In some cases, patients may experience allergic reactions (hives, trouble swallowing, skin rash) or liver problems (loss of appetite, yellowing skin, dark-colored urine, stomach pain).

Bottom Line

After the recent spring season increase in COVID-19 cases, it is clear that we are still far away from a post-pandemic society. With new and more infectious omicron subvariants and increasingly fewer people masking up in public spaces, the risk of catching coronavirus is still very real. The state of New Jersey recently saw a spike in COVID-19 cases during the last two weeks of May 2022.
