Norsvasc FAQ(s)

Below are a few frequently asked questions about a Norsvac (Almoldipine) Prescription

Is There a Difference Between The Generic and Brand-Name Prescription?

In short, no. Brand-name and generic drugs do not differ in effectiveness, active ingredients, or dosage prescribed. Essentially, the only difference between generic and brand-name drugs is that a generic prescription is made by a different manufacturer and therefore costs much less than the brand name.

What is a Calcium Channel Blocker?

Calcium channel blockers, also known as calcium agonists, are a medication often prescribed to reduce high blood pressure. Calcium is essential for helping our heart and arteries contract stronger and increase blood flow. Therefore calcium blockers work to keep calcium from entering the cells and in turn bloodstream. Other types of blood pressure medications include

  • Diuretics
  • Beta-blockers
  • ACE inhibitors
  • Angiotensin II Receptors Blockers
  • Renin Inhibitiors

Are there Other Alternatives to Norvasc?

Staying with the category of calcium blockers, there are two other medications that are similar to Norvasc. Adalator or Nifedipine ER (Generic) and Cardizem or Ditiiazem ER (Generic). One of the most notable differences between the three calcium blockers is if they are short-acting or long-acting. Norvasc and Cardizem are long-acting calcium blockers, meaning medication is slowly released and provides longer-lasting effects. In contrast, Adalato is short-acting that produces more immediate relief for a shorter period of time.

Bottom Line

Norsvac (Almoldipine) is a common blood pressure management medication that can greatly improve the quality of life and the ability to exercise and participate in daily activities for those who have high blood pressure. The price of the medication without insurance varies depending on if you are taking the generic or brand-name prescription, in which the brand-name is significantly more expensive. Mira helps take the guesswork of medication pricing.
